Meet the Sergeant

Richard (Rick) Tommer Jr. began his career with the Sterling Police Department in February 1988.  Prior to working for the Sterling Police Department, Sgt. Tommer was a Reserve Officer for the Lyons Police Department for over two years.  Sgt. Tommer serves as Sterling’s Assistant City Fire Chief and is a State Certified Medical First Responder.      

Duties

The Police Sergeant performs duties in the protection of life and property and the preservation of order in the City of Sterling. The employee enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances and assists with investigations, patrol duties, and providing public assistance. The Police Sergeant oversees departmental equipment and fleet management.  Additionally, the Police Sergeant supervises and coordinates the activities of members of the police department, in the absence of the Chief of Police.
