Mission Statement
The mission of the City of Sterling’s Municipal Electric Distribution Department is to provide and maintain quality electric services to all residential, commercial, and industrial customers equally.
We will consistently and conscientiously apply our knowledge and skills toward our goal of providing the best services possible.
With pride and commitment, we will strive to make the best decisions possible for the safety and economical good of the City of Sterling and its residents.
Departmental Description & Responsibilities
The City of Sterling maintains and operates one of more than 2,000 community-owned public power utilities in the United States.
The Electric Distribution Department constructs, maintains and operates the electric distribution system which provides electricity for all residential, commercial and industrial customers in the city. Sterling also provides electricity to many of the rural residential, commercial, and agricultural properties in all directions closely surrounding the city limits with our farthest customers approximately 5 miles south of Sterling.
There are approximately 1,200 metered services within our service territory. Besides the operation and maintenance of Sterling’s power grid, the distribution department also installs, maintains, and troubleshoots all street, park and public security lighting in the city.
Other electrical responsibilities include traffic controls, Sterling Medical Center, Sterling Public Library, City Offices, Fire Department, public swimming pool and bathhouse, storm sirens, softball field lighting, tennis court lighting, volleyball court lighting, Christmas lighting, Sterling Lake and Campground electrical, and other miscellaneous city properties.
